Description
Costa Copta is a small flappy bird clone game which was made for a friend as a gag gift. The premise of the game is to get as far as you can, by flying in between the pipes. Each pipe flown through is a point add to your score. The position of the pipes are randomized between upper and lower limits so that the game should be different each time you play.
About the game
The game uses SDL which is a 2D graphics library for c++. This was one of my first times using SDL, the overall experience was a good one. It was very easy to use and had readily available sample code to get started and learn the basics of the package. Sadly due to how old this project is, there is no source code for the game :(
The game itself was one of the first times that I had made anything that could really be given to somebody else. While it might not be the most interesting or creative, it was a project which was completed from start to finish. As I had only been programming for a short while before this project, I estimate that the project took a few weeks to a month to complete.
Using SDL
SDL at the time was a big challenge for me as it was an introduction to a 3rd party API. Something which I have become a lot more adept at dealing with. If I remember correctly (I am writing this 2 years in the future) one of the hardest parts was managing the linking of the library itself. This is something that is not made particularly easy in c/c++ when compared to a language with its own package manager like Python (pip), or Node.js (npm).
Once I had gotten some sample code to work, all I had to do was add my own mechanics to the game. This was something that was not too hard to do as I had always been intrigued in how games worked behind the scenes. This meant that all I had to do was come up with some rudimentary code that would complete the job.
