Description
Difficult Dungeons is a small yet difficult platformer game made in the Processing language. The aim of Difficult Dungeons is to just simply get to the doorway in each level, in order to progress to the next level. There are loads of pitfalls and spikes for the player to fall into. So make sure you jump correctly!
Why did I make this?
This particular game was created for a piece of coursework for a Computer Animation and Multimedia module. As there was a huge time constraint on making the game, the code is not very clean. This will make expanding the game in the future much more difficult, but it was good enough for a strong grade! The game was made in Processing as that was part of the coursework constraints. We had completely free reign on the genre and mechanics though.
I picked a 2D side scroller as it would be fairly easy and fun to make, and at the time some of the more popular indie games were 2D side scrolling platformer remakes like 1001 Spikes and Spelunky. I also have a penchant for difficult games, hence both the title and play style of the game.
About the game
There is a simple intro and menu system where the player can change the difficulty (the height of the player’s jump), see the controls and just play the game. This is a simple state based systems. However, this game was made before I started researching programming patterns, so the code is not as clean as it should be. The game has a simple map loading mechanism so more maps and levels can be added very quickly. There are 2 different types if files which define a level, the entities and map files. Both of these files describe where the tiles and entities are placed. This means that a tool can be used in order for a level designer to more quickly and easily do their job.
